U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of statements on her official Twitter account in early February 2026, highlighting her meetings with local organizations and calling for reforms within federal immigration agencies.
On February 1, Jayapal expressed appreciation for several advocacy groups after recent discussions. She wrote, “It was so great to meet with so many groups and local leaders who are doing such incredible work in Seattle and beyond. Thank you to J Street, Jewish Voice for Peace, and IAFF for sitting down and for everything you do!”
In a subsequent post on February 2, Jayapal addressed the need for changes at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), stating, “When Democrats take the majority, DHS needs to be overhauled. In the meantime, we demand clear guardrails for ICE and CBP. No warrantless arrests, no masks, no private, for-profit detention centers. And there must be independent investigations and real accountability.”
Later that day, she criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson’s actions regarding congressional authority over federal law enforcement agencies: “Mike Johnson handing Congress’s constitutional power to the cult party of Trump — allowing their lawlessness to continue without checks. Congress has the power of the purse, and we can and must use it to rein in ICE and CBP.”
Pramila Jayapal has served as a member of the U.S. House since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott. Before her tenure in Congress, she was a member of the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and now residing in Seattle, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
