U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, used her Twitter account this week to highlight concerns about economic inequality, recent political developments, and transparency in high-profile legal matters.
On July 24, Jayapal marked the anniversary of the last federal minimum wage increase by posting: “16 years ago today, the federal minimum wage was raised to $7.25 per hour — and it hasn’t changed since. That’s because the system is rigged against working people and for billionaires like Donald Trump. Americans deserve better. It’s time to raise the wage.” The federal minimum wage has remained unchanged since 2009.
Later that day, she addressed a range of current issues with another post: “Trumpflation. The Epstein files. FTC firing. Planned Parenthood funding. Here are 3 bad things and 3 good things you need to know from the past week to stay engaged and keep up your resistance! https://t.co/cbn24EPFMh” The tweet references inflation attributed to former President Donald Trump, developments related to Jeffrey Epstein’s case files, changes at the Federal Trade Commission, and funding for Planned Parenthood.
On July 25, Jayapal questioned the transparency of ongoing investigations involving Ghislaine Maxwell: “I do not trust Trump’s Justice Department for one second to privately meet with Ghislaine Maxwell and then truthfully report their findings. We need to hear from her, and it needs to be public and accessible for the American people.”
Jayapal has served in Congress since 2017 after replacing Jim McDermott as representative for Washington’s 7th district.[1] She previously held a seat in the Washington State Senate from 2014 through 2016.[2] Born in Chennai in 1965,[3] Jayapal resides in Seattle and holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).[4]
