U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of tweets on January 20, 2026, addressing concerns about oversight of the Trump administration and issues related to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and tariffs.
In her first post at 15:24 UTC, Jayapal stated: “Two men in ICE detention say they saw guards kill a fellow detainee. Now the Trump administration is trying to deport the witnesses.
This looks a lot like a cover-up. We need an independent investigation NOW.”
Later that day, at 17:01 UTC, she added: “If Republicans continue refusing to conduct any oversight of Trump, Democrats will.
We’ll keep investigating ICE’s abuses of power. We’ll keep holding hearings to give impacted people a platform. And we’ll keep speaking out and fighting for accountability and justice.”
Addressing economic policy at 19:36 UTC, Jayapal tweeted: “YOU are paying Trump’s tariffs.
Every time he puts in place a new, reckless, pointless tariff, you’re the one footing the bill.”
Pramila Jayapal has served as the representative for Washington’s 7th district since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott in Congress. Before her tenure in Congress, she was a member of the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA, 1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
