U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who serves Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of tweets on February 19, 2026, addressing issues related to immigrant detention facilities and community engagement in education.

In her first tweet of the day, Jayapal wrote: “I received notification of yet another death at an ICE facility, meaning 38 people have died in custody since Trump returned to office. ICE is failing to ensure the health and safety of the people it is responsible for. We need immediate oversight of this entire operation.” (posted February 19, 2026).

Later that afternoon, she commented on conditions inside specific detention centers: “It is heartbreaking to see what is happening inside immigrant detention facilities like the one in Dilley, Texas, where hundreds of children have been detained by Trump. Our taxpayer dollars should not be going towards this cruelty.” (posted February 19, 2026).

Shifting focus later that evening, Jayapal shared about her meeting with local students: “I had a wonderful visit with Seattle Central College’s Student Council to talk about how I can support them and their work to expand access to higher education throughout our community. Go Tigers!” (posted February 19, 2026).

Pramila Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since 2017 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in what was then Madras State and now resides in Seattle. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
