Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of tweets on October 10, 2025, addressing the ongoing government shutdown and its impact on American citizens.
In a post published at 2:05 a.m. UTC, Jayapal asked constituents to share their experiences related to the shutdown, stating: “Were you recently furloughed? Have you gotten notice that your health insurance premiums are going up? Tell me how you’ve been impacted by this Republican shutdown. I want to hear your story, so I can better fight for you! Thank you for sharing.”
Later that day at 3:10 p.m. UTC, she criticized House Speaker Johnson for not working towards an end to the shutdown: “Speaker Johnson is once again canceling votes rather than negotiating to end this shutdown. On Oct 14th, the House of Representatives will have been out of session for 25 days. It’s time for Republicans to come back from their vacations and get to work for the American people.”
At 4:06 p.m. UTC on October 10th, Jayapal highlighted concerns about healthcare coverage during the impasse: “Neither are the millions of Americans who are about to see their health care costs skyrocket — or are at risk of losing coverage altogether. It’s time to come to the table and negotiate so we can end this Republican shutdown.”
Pramila Jayapal has served as a member of Congress since 2017 after replacing Jim McDermott and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, Jayapal graduated from Georgetown University with a bachelor’s degree in 1986 and later from Northwestern University in 1990.
