U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of statements on January 22, 2026, regarding Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into former President Donald Trump’s actions related to the events of January 6th.

In her first post on January 22, Jayapal stated: “Today, Jack Smith is in front of the @HouseJudiciary to tell us about his investigation into Trump’s criminal actions surrounding January 6th. I was in the Capitol that day, and I know what happened: Trump incited a violent insurrection to try and overturn the 2020 election.”

Later that day, she continued: “Donald Trump spread lies and conspiracy theories to his followers to make them believe the 2020 election was rigged against him, then incited an angry mob to attack the U.S. Capitol to stop the election certification. These are Special Counsel Jack Smith’s findings.”

In a subsequent statement posted on January 22 as well, Jayapal quoted Special Counsel Jack Smith: “‘It doesn’t matter if you won or lost the election. You still have to fight like hell.’ Special Counsel Jack Smith says that Donald Trump KNEW his allegations of election fraud were lies when he spread them.”

Pramila Jayapal has served as a member of Congress for Washington’s 7th District since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017. She previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016 and resides in Seattle after being born in Chennai in 1965. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.

The statements come amid ongoing investigations into former President Trump’s conduct during and after the November 2020 presidential election and his alleged role in encouraging efforts to disrupt the certification of electoral votes by Congress.
