U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, currently serving Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of statements on December 11, 2025, addressing issues related to immigration enforcement and international relations.
In her first tweet of the day, Jayapal criticized the practices of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol under former President Donald Trump. She stated: “Trump’s ICE and Border Patrol are detaining people with deep roots in our communities and who are complying with immigration check-ins and requirements. Why? To put more money into the pockets of the rich who run private, for-profit detention centers.” (December 11, 2025)
Later that afternoon, Jayapal reported a judicial order regarding an immigration case: “BREAKING: A judge has ordered that the Trump administration release Kilmar Ábrego García from ICE custody immediately. The administration must comply.” (December 11, 2025)
Jayapal also reflected on her personal role as a legislator with immigrant heritage. She wrote: “As the first and only Indian American woman in the US House, I’m deeply invested in the relationship between our two countries. From trade and protecting democracy to immigration and human rights, I’ll keep working to strengthen these bonds and work on areas of disagreement.” (December 11, 2025)
Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in what was then Madras State in India in 1965, she now resides in Seattle. Jayapal is a graduate of Georgetown University (BA, 1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
