Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, has used her social media platform to address concerns about detention center conditions and policies affecting transgender servicemembers.

On June 1, 2026, Jayapal criticized the reported state of Delaney Hall in New Jersey, stating, “The conditions reported inside Delaney Hall in New Jersey are indefensible — lack of medical care, inedible food, unsanitary conditions — all so a private company can profit. Delaney Hall and every private, for-profit detention center must be shut down.”

Later that day, she commented on policies impacting transgender individuals in the military: “Trump and Hegseth’s ban on trans servicemembers is rooted in hate, not reality. I’m glad to see further legal action against this discriminatory policy.” She also posted a tweet with transgender pride flags on June 1:

Jayapal has been an advocate for civil rights issues during her tenure in Congress. Before joining the U.S. House of Representatives, she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
