U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, posted a series of statements on social media addressing immigration detention practices and U.S. military involvement abroad.
On March 8, 2026, Jayapal shared her reaction to correspondence from children at the Dilley Detention Center in Texas. She wrote, “These are letters and drawings from children at the Dilley Detention Center in Texas.
Trump isn’t going after the “worst of the worst.” He’s going after kids — who should be home, in school, and playing with their friends.
This is absolutely heartbreaking — and it must end.”
Later that day, Jayapal referenced an encounter involving Kristi Noem and alleged wrongful detentions by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). She stated on March 8, “The day before Kristi Noem was fired, I confronted her about DHS wrongfully detaining American citizens, some of whom were sitting right behind her.
I’m grateful for their voices and the continued work of UnidosMN. This fight is far from over — I’m not stopping.”
On March 9, Jayapal addressed ongoing U.S. military operations in Iran following news of another servicemember’s death. She wrote, “A seventh U.S. servicemember has died as a result of Trump’s illegal and unconstitutional war in Iran. My heart is with their family and loved ones.
Congress must step up to reassert our constitutional power before more Americans are killed.”
Pramila Jayapal succeeded Jim McDermott as representative for Washington’s 7th district in 2017 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle at age 57, she holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA) and Northwestern University.
