Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, has raised concerns on social media regarding recent actions by federal agencies and officials.
On February 17, 2026, Jayapal posted about surveillance activities involving members of Congress: “Here’s why it matters that the Department of Justice is spying on Members of Congress.”
Later that day, she criticized the Secretary of Commerce in another post: “Three lies and a truth from the Secretary of Commerce. Resign now.”
On February 18, 2026, Jayapal commented on an announcement by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) regarding funding for detention: “ICE announced they’re going to spend more than $38 billion to detain thousands of more people.
With that amount of money, we could end homelessness, extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies, or provide school lunches to every kid in America.
This is totally unacceptable.”
Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Her educational background includes degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
