Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress since 2017, marked the 250th anniversary of the United States Postal Service (USPS) and criticized recent efforts by Republicans to cut or privatize public services in a series of posts on July 26 and 27, 2025.

On July 26, Jayapal posted: “Today, the United States Postal Service turns 250 years old. As Donald Trump and Republicans work to cut and privatize the USPS and other services for Americans, I’ll keep working to protect them — because our government should work for YOU, not greedy billionaires.”

Later that evening, she addressed Republican actions regarding Medicaid: “When Republicans voted to cut Medicaid, they said the American people would ‘get over it.’ We will never get over people dying because their health care was stolen. And we will fight with everything we have to save Medicaid and the people who rely on it.”

On July 27, Jayapal commented on America’s Refugee Resettlement Program: “America’s Refugee Resettlement Program has long been a bipartisan effort to save lives. The evangelical community has even called it the ‘crown jewel of American humanitarianism.’ Trump and Republicans are trying to destroy it.”

Pramila Jayapal is currently serving her district after replacing Jim McDermott in Congress in 2017. She previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965, Jayapal resides in Seattle. She graduated from Georgetown University with a BA in 1986 and earned another degree from Northwestern University in 1990.
