U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of statements on January 12, 2026, addressing recent political controversies and legislative issues.
In her first post, Jayapal criticized several Republican figures for their comments regarding an incident in Minneapolis. On January 12, she wrote: “Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Kristi Noem are LYING to the American people about what we all saw happen on video in Minneapolis. Renee Good wasn’t trying to run over an agent. Her last words were ‘I’m not mad at you.’ Then she was shot and killed.”
Later that day, Jayapal addressed Congressional efforts to regulate stock trading by lawmakers. At 17:20 UTC on January 12, she stated: “House Republicans’ new legislation on Congressional stock trading falls far short of what the American people want and deserve. The House must move forward on our bipartisan consensus bill, the Restore Trust in Congress Act. My full statement with @Rep_Magaziner and @RepAOC:”
In a subsequent post at 19:22 UTC the same day, Jayapal called for legislative action to limit presidential military authority regarding Venezuela. She wrote: “Congress must pass a war powers resolution to restrict Trump’s illegal actions in Venezuela. We cannot allow this reckless President and billionaire oil tycoons to unilaterally authorize military force, launching us into another foreign conflict just to make themselves richer.”
Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th district since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
