U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of statements on social media on May 14, 2026, criticizing Republican-led hearings and immigration enforcement policies.

In her first post, Jayapal stated: “Republicans held a hearing to attack communities that want everyone to feel safe calling 911 and reporting crimes. Let’s set the record straight: It’s this administration’s mass deportation campaign and lawless ICE that make us less safe.” (May 14, 2026)

Later that day, she added: “Republicans are using their anti-immigrant agenda to distract from the real issues at hand.” (May 14, 2026)

In a subsequent post, Jayapal wrote: “Immigrants who are afraid that local law enforcement will turn them over to ICE are less likely to report crimes or serve as witnesses. This is why local policies that distinguish federal civil immigration law from local criminal law enforcement are important and keep us all” (May 14, 2026)

Jayapal has served in Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.

Her recent comments come amid ongoing national debates about the intersection of immigration policy and public safety. She emphasized concerns that aggressive federal immigration enforcement can deter immigrant communities from cooperating with local police.
