Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, has used her social media platform to voice criticism of recent Republican legislative proposals and actions by the Trump administration.
On March 19, 2026, Jayapal posted about Republican-backed legislation concerning animal welfare and immigration policy. She stated, “Republicans claim they’re standing up for animal welfare, but it’s just another excuse for their bill that would allow immigrants to be deported without a conviction. This is absurd legislation. If Republicans cared about animal cruelty, they should look at Kristi Noem.”
Later that day, she addressed a case involving a child and his father detained at a Texas facility under Trump-era policies: “The Trump administration used a 5-year-old Liam Ramos as bait. Then they detained him and his father at a for-profit detention center in Texas. Now, a judge is denying the family’s asylum case. This repeated traumatization is utterly cruel. I hope this decision is overturned.”
In an additional post on March 19, Jayapal criticized the Trump administration’s approach to public health: “Trump’s administration is lying and spreading misinformation, all while cutting research funding, and as a result, we’re seeing outbreaks of measles across the country. People will die. We must follow the science to keep our communities safe and healthy.”
Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since 2017 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965, she currently resides in Seattle and holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
