U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, used her social media platform on October 3, 2025, to address several pressing political issues, including reproductive rights, immigration enforcement actions, and the ongoing government shutdown.
In a post made at 16:17 UTC, Jayapal wrote: “Republicans are hell bent on going after our reproductive rights. They’re limiting abortion access, they’re trying to limit contraception — and at the same time they’re making the system more dangerous and expensive for all of us.”
Later that day at 19:18 UTC, she highlighted an immigration case involving a family separated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE): “Jackie and her four young children were kidnapped from a picnic by ICE. Today, those kids are still missing their mother. Listen to Jackie’s friend, Mimi, tell their story:”
Addressing the federal government shutdown in another post at 19:38 UTC, Jayapal criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson’s handling of legislative proceedings: “We are 3 days into a Republican shutdown, and Speaker Mike Johnson is cancelling votes and letting his Members stay on vacation. Democrats are ready to negotiate a bill that ends this crisis, saves health care, and cuts costs for the American people. Where are the Republicans?”
Jayapal’s comments come as debates over abortion access continue across various states and within Congress. The Biden administration has also faced criticism from both parties regarding immigration enforcement practices.
Pramila Jayapal has served in Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
