U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, used her social media platform to comment on immigration enforcement and congressional ethics proposals in a series of posts dated January 17 and 18, 2026.
On January 17, Jayapal addressed the conduct of federal immigration authorities during protests. She wrote, “Good. It’s time for Trump’s ICE and Border Patrol to stop assaulting peaceful protestors and violating the First Amendment. Follow the damn law.” The post referenced concerns about alleged use of force by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol agents against demonstrators.
Later that evening, Jayapal shared an account involving a U.S. citizen with refugee origins. She stated on January 17: “Mubashir and his family came to the United States as refugees from Ethiopia when he was a child, and they all became naturalized citizens in 2019. Despite being a U.S. citizen, Mubashir was targeted by ICE, assaulted, and detained. Listen to his story:” The tweet linked to further information about Mubashir’s experience.
On January 18, Jayapal commented on legislative efforts related to stock trading by members of Congress. She posted: “ICYMI: Republicans’ proposal on congressional stock trading is a massive disappointment. Our Restore Trust in Congress Act has bipartisan consensus and will actually stop members of Congress from owning and trading stocks once and for all. Let’s pass it.”
Pramila Jayapal has served in the U.S. House since succeeding Jim McDermott in 2017 after previously holding office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965, she currently resides in Seattle and holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
