U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who serves Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of statements on her official social media account addressing recent actions by federal agencies and the ongoing government shutdown.
On October 20, 2025, Jayapal criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under former President Donald Trump’s administration, stating: “Trump’s ICE has detained more than 170 U.S. citizens this year — something they have no authority to do. This is absolutely unacceptable.”
Later that day, she commented on the status of the federal government shutdown and its effects: “We are 20 days into the Republican Shutdown — health care costs are skyrocketing and federal workers aren’t getting paid. What is Trump doing? Building his gold plated ballroom.”
On October 21, 2025, Jayapal continued to address health care concerns linked to the shutdown: “Premium notices are going out now, and open enrollment is about to begin across the country. Thanks to Republicans’ unwillingness to even negotiate, costs are skyrocketing. We cannot afford to kick this health care crisis down the road.”
Pramila Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott. Before her tenure in Congress, she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965, Jayapal resides in Seattle and holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
