Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of tweets on July 21 and 22, 2025, raising concerns about deaths in ICE custody and criticizing recent fiscal policies attributed to former President Trump and Republican lawmakers.

On July 21, Jayapal wrote: “Today, ICE notified Congress of the 13th death in ICE custody this year, the 10th death since Trump came into office. What a tragedy. ICE is out of control. This is what happens when you privatize the incarceration of immigrants to benefit for-profit companies.”

Later that day, she addressed federal deficit projections: ” BREAKING: Trump and Republicans’ Big Bad Betrayal is now projected to add $3.4 TRILLION to the deficit over the next decade. They’re selling your future for billionaire tax cuts” (July 21).

On July 22, Jayapal posted further allegations regarding treatment in immigration detention: “Denied medical care. Abused by guards. Forced to eat off the ground. Trump’s ICE is treating immigrants as less than human. This must end and there has to be accountability.”

Pramila Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since 2017 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
