Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, posted a series of tweets on December 20 and 21, 2025, addressing issues related to immigration courts, government transparency, and political targeting of advocacy groups.
On December 20, Jayapal shared her observations from an immigration court session involving children. She wrote, “Lucy did not know where she was, nor did she understand the words being spoken around her… & yet, under the system we have built, she was the one required to answer. I witnessed the kids docket at immigration court. It’s cruel & inhumane beyond belief.”
Later that day, Jayapal commented on attempts to obscure wrongdoing by stating: “Cover-up (noun): an attempt to prevent people’s discovering the truth about a serious mistake or crime.”
In another tweet posted early on December 21, Jayapal addressed actions taken by former President Trump and Republican lawmakers against certain organizations. She stated: “Trump and Republicans are using their power to go after groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center, which combats white supremacy. They are using the force of government to go after organizations they disagree with politically. That’s authoritarianism.”
Jayapal has served in Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, she holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
