U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has served Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, addressed several policy concerns in a series of posts on October 7, 2025, focusing on immigration detention, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) communications, and healthcare costs.

In her first post, Jayapal stated, “71% of immigrants detained by ICE have no criminal convictions. These are mostly private, for-profit prisons that put their bottom lines over health and safety. We see the results — immigrants are dying. It is absolutely outrageous.” (posted October 7, 2025).

In a subsequent message on the same day, she criticized the Department of Homeland Security and former President Donald Trump’s administration, writing, “Another day, another lie from DHS. Trump and his administration are making this country more dangerous — for both immigrants and US citizens. This lawlessness must stop.” (posted October 7, 2025).

Later, Jayapal addressed healthcare issues and the actions of House Speaker Mike Johnson, stating, “Mike Johnson wants to kick the can down the road when it comes to addressing skyrocketing premiums — but this is a crisis right now. NOW is the time to negotiate to lower costs — not after millions have been kicked off their health care.” (posted October 7, 2025).

Jayapal has been a member of Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
