U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who serves Washington’s 7th district in Congress, has posted a series of statements on social media criticizing recent immigration enforcement actions and policies under the current administration.
On December 6, 2025, Jayapal described an incident in North Carolina: “In Charlotte, NC, Border Patrol raided a church, tried to arrest the same U.S. citizen twice within five minutes, and scared families so much that thousands of kids were kept out of school. In WA and OR, we’ve seen people kidnapped from preschools and daycares. It’s disgusting.”
Later that day, she highlighted the work of an immigration attorney: “Sarah Owings is a lawyer who represents immigrants who have been detained by ICE. As Trump and Republicans remove all oversight measures at these facilities, it is critical that we listen to her clients’ stories.”
In another post on December 6, Jayapal referenced judicial decisions against current detention policies: “220 judges, including 23 appointed by Trump, have ruled that this administration’s mass detention policies are unlawful. They are sending tens of thousands of innocent immigrants into for-profit prisons with subhuman conditions and no access to attorneys. It’s horrific.”
Pramila Jayapal has served in the U.S. Congress since 2017 after replacing Jim McDermott as representative for Washington’s 7th District. Before her congressional tenure, she was a member of the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
