U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who serves Washington’s 7th district, has recently posted a series of tweets addressing issues related to disaster relief for immigrants, opposition to former President Donald Trump’s political agenda, and the treatment of immigrant firefighters.

On August 27, 2025, Jayapal wrote: “When disaster hits, we cannot only help those with certain legal status. We have an obligation to help every single person in need. This is unfathomable discrimination against immigrants that will cost our country lives.” The tweet highlights her concerns regarding disaster aid policies that she believes discriminate against immigrants.

Later the same day, Jayapal commented on public sentiment towards Trump’s influence over Washington D.C.: “NEW POLL: Americans overwhelmingly oppose Trump’s authoritarian takeover of DC. The people are with us, and we won’t just sit idly by as Trump tries to turn this country into a dictatorship. We will organize and fight back.”

On August 28, 2025, Jayapal criticized actions reportedly taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE): “Trump’s ICE is arresting firefighters who are ACTIVELY FIGHTING ONE OF THE LARGEST WILDFIRES IN THE UNITED STATES. There aren’t words to describe this cruelty. It’s absurd and completely against America’s best interests.”

Pramila Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott. Before her tenure in Congress, she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and now residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
