Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, used her social media platform on August 15 and 16, 2025, to voice concerns over federal funding cuts to scientific research, defend Social Security against proposed changes, and warn about threats to democracy.

On August 15, Jayapal posted about her participation in a town hall event hosted by UAW4121: “I joined @UAW4121’s Kill the Cuts Town Hall to stand up to Trump’s cuts to science and research. These cuts will take the US off the frontlines of innovation and stifle lifesaving research. Funding must be reinstated.”

Later that day, she marked Social Security’s anniversary with AARP, stating: “I joined @AARP to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Social Security. As Trump and Republicans continue working to destroy Social Security and its benefits, I will keep fighting to protect this vital program and ensure it can keep serving generations of Americans.”

The following day, Jayapal addressed concerns about political developments under former President Donald Trump: “As Trump increasingly acts like a dictator, our solidarity is more important than ever. We need to link arms and stand up for facts, for free press, for our neighbors, and for democracy. Listen to more of my conversation with @RickSteves anywhere you get your podcasts!”

Jayapal has served in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott. Before joining Congress, she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965, she resides in Seattle and holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
