Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, used her social media platform on July 27, 2025, to criticize proposed Medicaid cuts by former President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers.

In a tweet posted at 17:54 UTC, Jayapal wrote: “Longer wait times. Less access to care. Complete losses of coverage.

Trump’s Big Bad Betrayal will kick 250,000 Washingtonians off of their health care, shutter hospitals, and devastate communities.”

Later that day at 19:37 UTC, she added: “By cutting Medicaid, Republicans are STEALING from the American people.

All so that billionaires can buy more yachts.”

At 21:39 UTC on the same day, Jayapal posted another message stating: “ICYMI: Trump and Republicans’ cuts to Medicaid will kill Americans.

Cruel. Inhumane. Unnecessary. All so billionaires can get even richer.”

Jayapal’s remarks come amid ongoing national debates about health care funding and access in the United States. She has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since succeeding Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, Jayapal is also an alumna of Georgetown University and Northwestern University.

Her comments reflect concerns among some lawmakers regarding the potential impact of proposed Medicaid reductions on state residents and broader implications for hospital operations and community health resources.
