Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district and has served in the U.S. Congress since 2017, used social media on September 30, 2025, to criticize Republican actions regarding government funding and health care.
In a post at 15:14 UTC, Jayapal stated, “Democrats are in DC, ready to negotiate and make a deal that cancels Trump and Republicans’ cuts, lowers costs, and saves health care for the American people. But Mike Johnson chose to send House Republicans home. Republicans are shutting the government down.”
She continued her commentary later that day at 16:11 UTC with another message: “Democrats are standing united, ready to fund the government and save Americans’ health care. Republicans left town, refused to negotiate, and would rather shut down the government and rip health care away from millions more Americans.”
At 17:05 UTC on September 30, Jayapal posted a third statement: “Republicans control the House, the Senate, & the White House. It is on them to govern and negotiate with Democrats if they need our votes. But instead of trying to fund the government in a bipartisan manner, they are intent on stripping health care away from even more Americans.”
Jayapal’s remarks come amid an ongoing budget standoff in Congress as lawmakers approach a potential federal government shutdown. In her statements across several posts throughout September 30th, she attributed responsibility for stalled negotiations and potential consequences for American health care coverage directly to Republican leadership.
Pramila Jayapal succeeded Jim McDermott as representative of Washington’s 7th district in 2017 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai (formerly Madras), India in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
