U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, has used her social media platform to issue pointed criticisms of Republican lawmakers, former President Donald Trump, and the Supreme Court. In a series of posts made between September 14 and 15, 2025, Jayapal alleged that key American institutions are failing to uphold democratic checks and balances.
On September 14, Jayapal wrote: “America’s checks and balances aren’t working — Republicans in Congress are completely beholden to Donald Trump and the Supreme Court has been bought out by right-wing billionaires. It is on us, the people, to use our power and protect our rights.”
The following day, she commented on recent meetings between business leaders and Trump at the White House: “A couple weeks ago, Big Tech billionaires & wealthy CEOs flocked to the White House to praise Trump. In return for their loyalty, donations to Trump’s campaigns, and purchases of his crypto scam, he’s giving them massive handouts. Trump is a president for billionaires, not us.” This post was published on September 15.
Later that same day, Jayapal addressed economic concerns: “Long-term unemployment is at its highest level since the pandemic. Trump’s economy: Americans can’t find jobs, costs are rising, and the billionaires get richer.”
Jayapal has served as a member of Congress representing Washington’s 7th District since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott. She previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
