U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, made a series of statements on social media regarding Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into former President Donald Trump and the events surrounding January 6th.
On January 23, 2026, Jayapal commented on Republican responses to Jack Smith’s findings, stating, “Republicans barely even asked about Jack Smith’s findings today — because they know that they can’t touch the facts of his investigation. We all know what happened on Jan 6th — Donald Trump incited an insurrection. And Jack Smith’s findings confirm that.”
Later the same day, she reiterated her position by writing, “Republicans didn’t attack Jack Smith’s facts of the case today. They didn’t try and say Trump didn’t attempt to overturn the election. Why? Because they know exactly what he did and what crimes he committed. But to please their cult leader, they spent their time deflecting.”
In a subsequent post on January 23, Jayapal said, “Yesterday, Jack Smith was able to tell the American people what he found from his extensive investigation: that Donald Trump committed criminal acts by trying to overturn the 2020 election. Leading up to and on January 6th, Trump attempted to end our democracy.”
Pramila Jayapal has served in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
Jack Smith was appointed as special counsel by the Department of Justice to investigate efforts by former President Donald Trump and others related to attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
