U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district since 2017 and previously served in the Washington State Senate, posted a series of tweets on September 30, 2025, criticizing Republican actions related to government funding and health care coverage.
In her first tweet at 20:22 UTC, Jayapal stated: “If Republicans refuse to negotiate, 4 million Americans could lose their health care — in addition to the millions that will be kicked off of Medicaid thanks to Trump’s Big Bad Betrayal. Dems are fighting to protect your care. Republicans would rather shut down the government.”
Later that evening at 21:35 UTC, she announced a live event discussing these issues: “HAPPENING NOW: I’m live with @JosephGallina of @CalltoActivism to talk about how Republicans are shutting down the government and ripping health care away from the American people. Tune in: https://t.co/hQsXfaDqWH”
At 22:12 UTC on the same day, Jayapal further commented on accountability for a potential shutdown: “Trump and Republicans will take the blame if the government shuts down tonight. They have decimated federal agencies, fired thousands of federal workers, & stripped health care from 15 million people. It’s clear that they have no interest in working FOR the American people.”
Pramila Jayapal is currently serving her term as U.S. Representative for Washington’s 7th district after replacing Jim McDermott in 2017. Before joining Congress, she was a member of the Washington State Senate from 2014 through 2016. Born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in India in 1965 and now residing in Seattle, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA) and Northwestern University.
