U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, used her social media platform to criticize the ongoing government shutdown and its effects on federal workers and healthcare access.
On October 19, 2025, Jayapal posted: “Federal workers are pissed off at this administration. They have been demeaned, villainized & fired — and now Trump is threatening to not pay them at all as this Republican Shutdown continues.
But they still want Democrats to keep fighting for affordable health care & democracy.”
Two days later, she announced a community event focused on the shutdown’s impact: “WA-07: On Tuesday Oct 21, I’m hosting a town hall on the Republican Shutdown and its impacts on our community.
Space is limited and RSVPs are required, so sign up now to secure your spot!” (posted October 20).
Addressing healthcare concerns in rural areas in another post dated October 20, Jayapal wrote: “No one should have to drive hours to get help when there’s an emergency.
Thanks to Trump and Republicans’ cuts to Medicaid, rural hospitals across the country will close. People will die. It’s time to cancel the cuts.”
Jayapal replaced Jim McDermott in representing Washington’s 7th district in Congress after serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA) and Northwestern University.
