U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, recently posted a series of statements on social media criticizing former President Donald Trump and the current administration’s actions regarding law enforcement and transparency.
On January 12, 2026, Jayapal wrote, “Donald Trump’s threat of criminal charges against Fed Chair Jerome Powell is another example of this authoritarian President going after his perceived political enemies. He’s destroying trust in government and acting like a dictator.”
Later that day, she addressed the issue of bodycam footage related to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shooting in Minneapolis, stating, “Tomorrow is Kristi Noem’s deadline to give House Democrats unedited bodycam footage from the Minneapolis ICE shooting and other evidence. The Trump administration is lying to our faces. We’ll keep fighting for justice.” This message was posted on January 12, 2026.
In a subsequent post on January 12, 2026, Jayapal called for Congressional Democrats to take action regarding Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding: “Democrats in Congress must refuse to fund Trump’s DHS until we get accountability, guardrails, and more answers about the ICE killing in Minneapolis. This admin is sending a violent military force after US citizens and immigrants of all legal statuses. We must fight back.”
Jayapal has been active in national politics since succeeding Jim McDermott as representative for Washington’s 7th district in 2017. Before her tenure in Congress, she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
