Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, recently addressed several national policy issues through a series of posts on her social media account.

On May 14, 2026, Jayapal wrote: “Trump’s DOJ is targeting journalists for reporting on the Iran war. This is an attack on the free press and on our First Amendment. As the Trump administration continues to lie to justify their illegal war — we need the press now more than ever.”

The following day, May 15, she commented on federal spending bills: “The $1 billion ballroom is rightfully getting a lot of attention. But the same bill also gives $70 BILLION to Trump’s lawless ICE & CBP, which still have $103 BILLION left over from the Big Bad Betrayal Bill. This bill wastes taxpayer dollars AND enables ICE’s brutality.”

Later that same day, Jayapal addressed U.S.-Cuba relations: “As a member of Congress, I have a duty to meet with people about the impact of US foreign policies. No amount of right-wing attacks will deter me from working to end the US blockade and humanitarian crisis in Cuba. We need real negotiations between our countries.”

Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th District in Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai (then Madras State) in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Her academic background includes degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
