U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, posted a series of tweets on August 1, 2025, sharply criticizing former President Donald Trump and his administration’s handling of economic policy and immigration.
In her first post at 18:50 UTC, Jayapal wrote: “Step one: Trump tanks the economy Step two: Data shows that Trump is tanking the economy Step three: Trump fires the person who puts out economic data so that in the future, no one will know he’s still tanking the economy”.
Later that evening at 20:36 UTC, she addressed alleged abuses against immigrants during the Trump administration, stating: “Beaten with wooden bats. Robbed of their savings. Denied medical attention. The Trump administration sent immigrants off to be tortured in a foreign prison — and their stories are absolutely horrifying.”
At 23:03 UTC on the same day, Jayapal further criticized Trump’s economic record by posting: “Job growth is down. Unemployment is up. Donald Trump and Republicans are ruining the American economy, all while making everything more expensive.”
Jayapal has been an active member of Congress since succeeding Jim McDermott in 2017. Before serving in Congress, she was a member of the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
Her recent posts continue her pattern of vocal opposition to former President Trump’s policies on both economic management and immigration enforcement.
