U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, posted a series of statements on October 15, 2025, addressing the ongoing government shutdown and issues related to immigration enforcement.
In her first post, Jayapal criticized former President Donald Trump amid the government closure: “We are in a Republican shutdown, and instead of working to open the government and ensure federal workers get paid, Trump is hosting a $1M per person fundraiser. He is working for the billionaires, not the American people.” (October 15, 2025).
Later that day, she raised concerns about deaths in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody: “I was just notified of yet another death in ICE custody — 20 people have died in their custody since Trump came into office. ICE is detaining people, mostly in private, for-profit prisons that put profit over health. There must be accountability and oversight.” (October 15, 2025).
Jayapal also directed a message to House Speaker Mike Johnson regarding the ongoing shutdown: “Here’s my message to Speaker Mike Johnson on the 15th day of this shutdown, from his very own podium.” (October 15, 2025).
Jayapal has been a member of Congress since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
