U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district since 2017, recently used her social media platform to voice concerns about the economic and healthcare impacts of policies associated with former President Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans.

On August 23, 2025, Jayapal posted about a conversation she had with Lisa Smith, Executive Director of the Washington State Microenterprise Association. She wrote: “I sat down with Lisa Smith, Executive Director of the Washington State Microenterprise Association, to hear more about what she’s hearing from small business owners as Trump continues to ramp up reckless trade wars. The following day, on August 24, Jayapal commented on rising back-to-school costs. She stated: “Back-to-school season should be an exciting time for kids and families. But this year, folks are facing skyrocketing costs for school supplies thanks to Trump’s reckless trade wars and bad economic policies. It’s time to tackle inflation and lower costs for working families.”

Later that same day, Jayapal addressed proposed Medicaid cuts by Republicans and their potential effects in Washington state. She said: “Trump and Republicans’ Medicaid cuts will hurt thousands in WA alone. Folks are losing the care that they need and families will pay the price. All so billionaires can get a tax break.”

Jayapal has served in Congress since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965, she currently resides in Seattle and holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
