U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, used her social media platform to comment on issues ranging from immigration enforcement to economic hardship in early January 2026.
On January 4, Jayapal posted about the actions of federal authorities under former President Donald Trump, stating: “Under Trump’s command, armed, masked men are terrorizing American communities, snatching immigrants of all statuses and even US citizens. Now, DHS is saying Real IDs aren’t reliable proof of lawful status. No one is safe from their mass deportation campaign.” The tweet highlights concerns regarding immigration enforcement practices and questions the reliability of Real ID cards as proof of legal status.
Later that day, Jayapal addressed economic concerns faced by Americans. In a post dated January 4, she wrote: “Trump promised to lower costs on day one. He lied, and millions of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, while Trump and Republicans work to make their billionaire buddies even richer.”
Continuing her commentary on economic challenges during a town hall tour across the country, Jayapal tweeted on January 5: “From Scranton to Seattle, I hear the same thing at town halls: people cannot afford to live and are worried about the future. I will never stop working to make this a country where every single person can live the American Dream, and not just survive but thrive.”
Jayapal has served as U.S. Representative for Washington’s 7th District since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai (formerly Madras), India in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Her academic background includes degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
