U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district since 2017, posted a series of tweets on May 7, 2026, addressing the Department of Justice’s actions against Rep. McIver, conditions in ICE detention centers under former President Trump, and recent gas price increases.

In her first tweet on May 7 at 16:12 UTC, Jayapal wrote: “I’m so proud to be part of the amazing group of women standing with @RepLaMonica. Trump’s Department of Justice is politically targeting Rep. McIver because she conducted congressional oversight of a detention facility. This is intimidation — it won’t work.”

Later that day at 18:42 UTC, she addressed concerns about immigration enforcement practices: “Internal ICE records reveal a rise in the use of force in detention centers under Trump. ICE agents are operating with impunity. We need to dismantle this agency and get accountability for the cruelty and pain they’ve inflicted on people across this country.”

At 20:57 UTC on the same day, Jayapal commented on economic issues affecting Americans: “The national average gas price is now $4.56/gallon. That’s a 66% increase since December. Trump did this. And Republicans in Congress let him.”

Jayapal has been an active member of Congress since succeeding Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in 1965, she currently resides in Seattle and holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
