U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, used her social media platform on August 7, 2025, to criticize recent policy moves by former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

In a post published at 15:32 UTC, Jayapal wrote, “Trump and Republicans’ Big Bad Betrayal will cause 22 MILLION families to lose some or all of their SNAP benefits. They’re literally taking food away from the hungry, just so billionaires can get a tax break.”

Later that day at 17:23 UTC, she continued her criticism of Trump’s immigration policies with another post: “Trump is ripping legal status away from millions of hard-working, rule-abiding immigrants — just so he can increase deportation numbers. It’s cruel, it’s ripping families apart, and it must end.”

At 18:38 UTC on the same day, Jayapal addressed the impact of new tariffs implemented under Trump’s administration. She stated: “At midnight, Trump’s reckless tariffs on dozens of countries took effect — making everything you buy more expensive. Food, clothes, cars, shoes, toys, and more will see their prices rise because of Trump’s trade wars.”

Pramila Jayapal has served as the U.S. Representative for Washington’s 7th District since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017. Before her tenure in Congress, she was a member of the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in what was then Madras State in India in 1965 and now residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
