U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, posted a series of statements on September 22, 2025, criticizing former President Donald Trump and the current political climate.
In a tweet posted at 13:58 UTC, Jayapal commented on the relationship between wealthy individuals and Trump: “When billionaires and rich CEOs interact with Trump, all they do is grovel — profusely thanking him and telling him what an amazing president he is. It’s pathetic. These people will do anything, including sucking up to an authoritarian leader, as long as it benefits them.”
Later that day at 16:40 UTC, she addressed the impending federal government shutdown: “The federal government shuts down in 8 days. Democrats are fighting for a funding package that reverses Trump and Republicans’ health care cuts — but they’re refusing to negotiate. Trump and Republicans would rather shut down the government than give you health care.”
In another post at 21:42 UTC, Jayapal criticized recent actions by the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS): “SCOTUS’s right-wing majority is handing Trump control of agencies that are meant to be independent and nonpartisan. They are using the shadow docket to rubber-stamp his authoritarian agenda. This is not how our democracy is meant to function.”
Jayapal has served in Congress since succeeding Jim McDermott in 2017 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, she holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
