U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, addressed several national issues and a sports milestone in a series of posts on August 18, 2025.

In her first post of the day, Jayapal commented on former President Donald Trump’s actions regarding federal authority in Washington D.C., writing on August 18: “Trump’s attempted takeover of DC is a plainly authoritarian power grab. And if he can do this in LA or our nation’s capital, then he can send a militarized force into your city, town, or community too. This is what dictators do, and we must stand up to it.”

Later that evening, she congratulated WNBA legend Sue Bird for receiving a unique honor. On August 18 at 20:16 UTC, Jayapal posted: “Congratulations to Sue Bird for being the first player in WNBA history to receive a statue in her honor! Well deserved “

Addressing immigration policy later that night, Jayapal criticized proposed changes to detention practices under the Trump administration’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). At 21:55 UTC on August 18 she wrote: “Trump’s ICE is planning to DOUBLE detention space in this country — even though most immigrants currently detained have no criminal convictions. This is disgusting and does nothing to help public safety.”

Pramila Jayapal has served as the U.S. Representative for Washington’s 7th District since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai (formerly Madras), India, she now resides in Seattle and holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
