Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, has recently addressed several national and local issues on her social media account.
On March 11, 2026, Jayapal commented on rising fuel costs, writing, “Since Trump began his war with Iran, gas prices have soared all across the country. This is not a red state or blue state issue. Costs are going up for millions of Americans.”
Later that day, she expressed support for local actions against private detention facilities for immigrants: “For profit mass incarceration facilities for immigrants have no place in our community. Thank you to our local leaders in King County for issuing this moratorium on detention facilities in our region.”
In another post from the evening of March 11, Jayapal addressed concerns over insurance premiums: “Thanks to Trump and Republicans, Americans across the country are paying tens of thousands of dollars this year just on insurance premiums. This is absolutely unacceptable and unaffordable.”
Jayapal has been an active figure in both federal and state politics. She succeeded Jim McDermott as representative of Washington’s 7th District in Congress after serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and now residing in Seattle at age 57, she holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
