Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, has recently used her social media platform to criticize former President Donald Trump and Republican policies regarding tariffs, health care programs, and tax filing systems.

On July 30, 2025, Jayapal posted on X: “Trump’s reckless tariffs and Republicans’ catering to billionaires are destroying the American economy.”

Later that same day, she addressed the anniversary of two major federal health programs: “Today, Medicare and Medicaid turned 60 years old — and as Trump and Republicans work to cut these programs and rip health care from Americans, Democrats are instead working to protect and expand them. We’ll keep fighting for quality, affordable health care for all.”

The following morning on July 31, Jayapal criticized changes to an IRS initiative: “Trump is eliminating Direct File — the IRS program that let you file your taxes completely for free. Why? So his billionaire buddies who run tax prep companies can keep taking your money.”

Jayapal’s remarks come amid ongoing national debates over economic policy, public health care funding, and access to free government services. The Medicare and Medicaid programs were established in 1965 under President Lyndon B. Johnson as part of his Great Society initiatives; their future has remained a central issue in partisan discussions about federal spending.

Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, Jayapal has served Washington’s 7th District since replacing Jim McDermott in Congress. She previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA) and Northwestern University.
