U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, issued a series of statements on August 26, 2025, criticizing former President Donald Trump’s actions regarding the Federal Reserve and broader economic policy.

In one post, Jayapal warned about the potential consequences of interfering with the Federal Reserve: “If this firing is successful, it will only further weaken our economy and your finances. The destruction of the Fed’s independence could put your retirement and college savings and your mortgage at risk. It could destroy your purchasing power and lead to faster inflation.” (August 26, 2025)

She also accused Trump of using authoritarian tactics to distract from rising consumer prices: “This authoritarian action by Trump is a cover-up for the fact that prices of everyday goods have continued to rise under his administration. He has failed to lower costs and build an economy that works for everyone — giving his billionaire buddies a giant tax break instead.” (August 26, 2025)

In another statement posted the same day, Jayapal asserted: “Trump is far more interested in authoritarian power grabs than he is in actually helping the American people. This attempted firing must be blocked in court and the Fed’s independence must be protected.” (August 26, 2025)

Jayapal’s comments come amid ongoing debates over central bank independence in U.S. politics. The Federal Reserve’s autonomy has historically been viewed as essential for maintaining stable monetary policy free from political influence.

Pramila Jayapal was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. She holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University. Before her election to Congress in 2017—where she succeeded Jim McDermott—she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016.
