U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, has recently posted a series of statements on her social media account regarding the ongoing conflict in the Strait of Hormuz and its economic consequences for Americans.
On April 17, 2026, Jayapal wrote: “RECAP: 6 weeks ago, the Strait of Hormuz was open. Today, after Trump’s war of choice that caused 13 US troops dead, thousands of Iranian and Lebanese civilians dead, millions more displaced, $50 billion of US taxpayer dollars wasted, gas prices sky high–the Strait has”.
The following day, she commented on the domestic impact of current policies: “Republicans are dismissing the real economic pain that Americans are feeling. They don’t care that their policies are increasing your prices.” This post reflects her criticism toward Republican leaders over rising costs faced by U.S. households.
Later on April 18, Jayapal added: “We are in a worse situation now than we were six weeks ago when the war started.”
Pramila Jayapal has served as a member of Congress since 2017 after succeeding Jim McDermott and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
