Rep. Pramila Jayapal, U.S. Congresswoman representing Washington’s 7th district since 2017, has used her social media platform to address a series of contentious issues involving immigration enforcement, government funding, and high-profile abuse cases.
On September 23, 2025, Jayapal criticized the actions of federal immigration authorities in a post that stated: “ICE agents grabbed a 5-year-old girl outside of her home and held her, screaming, to coerce her father, who has been in the US for 22 years, to be detained. This is cruel, disgusting, and must end. Trump is tearing families apart.”
The following day, on September 24, Jayapal commented on the looming threat of a government shutdown: “We have just one week left until a Republican government shutdown. Democrats are ready to pass a bill that keeps millions of Americans from getting kicked off their health care. Trump and Republicans won’t even come to the table to negotiate.”
Later that same day, she drew attention to survivor testimony regarding Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes. In reference to an interview with Haley Robson on her podcast “The Power You Have,” Jayapal wrote: “Haley Robson, a survivor of Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse, on how she feels when Trump calls the Epstein Files a hoax: ‘I’m enraged for different reasons.’ Listen to our full conversation on the most recent episode of The Power You Have, available anywhere you get your podcasts!”
Pramila Jayapal succeeded Jim McDermott in Congress in 2017 after serving in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal earned degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
