U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who serves Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of statements on January 31, 2026, addressing concerns over political rhetoric and economic challenges faced by small businesses.
In her first post of the day, Jayapal criticized comments from the Washington State Republican Party, writing on X: “Such bullshit, dangerous rhetoric from the WA GOP. It undermines the very notion of citizenship, takes an ax to First Amendment protections of free speech, is the kind of rhetoric that fuels violence, and is an insult to the thousands of people that I represent.” (January 31, 2026).
Later that evening, Jayapal highlighted the struggles facing small business owners amid growing corporate consolidation. She shared a story from a local entrepreneur named Cynthia: “This business represents years of sacrifice, long hours, and the belief that hard work and persistence should still mean something in this country.” (January 31, 2026). She urged her followers to listen to Cynthia’s experience about how larger corporations have threatened her livelihood.
In a subsequent post on January 31, Jayapal addressed messaging from federal officials: “The hateful and white supremacist messaging coming from this administration is disgraceful and dangerous — but unfortunately not surprising. We cannot let this become normal.”
Pramila Jayapal has represented Washington’s 7th congressional district since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017. Prior to her time in Congress, she served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA) and Northwestern University.
