U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, recently posted a series of messages on social media addressing high school students, private immigration detention facilities, and advocacy efforts.

On February 25, 2026, Jayapal invited local students to participate in a national art competition. In her post she wrote: “Attention high school students in WA-07

Submit your work to the Congressional Art Competition — and have a chance to have your art displayed in the U.S. Capitol! Entries are due 4/24 at 4:30 PM PST.

I look forward to seeing your creativity!

Later that day, Jayapal commented on developments related to private detention centers for immigrants operated by The GEO Group. She stated: “While this isn’t a final decision, this is good news.

The GEO Group is a private corporation that profits off cruelty and forced, unpaid labor.

Detained immigrants deserve compensation for their work, and these private, for-profit facilities shouldn’t exist.” (posted February 25, 2026).

In another post the same evening, Jayapal expressed continued resolve regarding her advocacy work: “We will not sit down, shut up, move on, or be silenced.” (posted February 25, 2026).

Pramila Jayapal has served as the representative for Washington’s 7th district since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017. Before joining Congress she was a member of the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in what was then Madras State in India in 1965 and now residing in Seattle at age 57, Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
