U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, posted a series of statements on September 9, 2025, criticizing former President Donald Trump’s actions and economic policies while joining student protests at Georgetown University.
In her first post of the day, Jayapal wrote: “I joined students at my alma mater @Georgetown this morning in a walkout to protest Trump’s authoritarian DC takeover. We will not bow down to a wannabe dictator. We will not accept troops in our streets, kidnapping Americans and violating our freedoms. We will fight. Free DC.” (September 9, 2025)
Later that afternoon, she addressed economic concerns linked to Trump-era tariffs: “Trump’s tariffs are costing the typical American household $2,400 per year. Gas, groceries, health care, and housing are all getting more expensive. We need policies that lower costs and help working people, not billionaire tax cuts and #Trumpflation.” (September 9, 2025)
In another statement posted that evening, Jayapal stated: “We are living in an unprecedented moment. Donald Trump, an authoritarian leader, has deployed federal troops to the streets of DC and is threatening other cities. But we, the people, will fight back against this fascism.” (September 9, 2025)
Jayapal is currently serving her term as U.S. Representative for Washington’s 7th district after succeeding Jim McDermott in 2017. She previously served in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016 and was born in Chennai in 1965 before moving to Seattle where she now resides. Jayapal graduated from Georgetown University with a BA in 1986 and later earned a degree from Northwestern University in 1990.
