U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who has represented Washington’s 7th district in Congress since 2017, posted a series of statements on January 6, 2026, marking the five-year anniversary of the January 6 Capitol insurrection and addressing recent developments related to pardons for those involved.
In her first post at 16:03 UTC, Jayapal stated, “HAPPENING NOW: I’m joining @RepJeffries and House Dems at a hearing marking five years since Trump incited an insurrection at the Capitol. As Republicans continue to try to rewrite the narrative of what happened on that dark day, we will continue to push for justice. Tune in: https://t.co/PEU53n1RRx”.
Later that day at 16:58 UTC, she commented on former President Donald Trump’s decision to pardon individuals convicted in connection with the events of January 6: “Trump’s pardon of 1,600+ January 6th rioters has grave consequences for our democracy. It empowers a group of people willing to commit violence in the President’s name and shows that anyone loyal to this administration is completely above the law. https://t.co/IIdjmOSbcA”.
At 17:45 UTC, Jayapal expressed gratitude toward law enforcement officers present during the attack: “As we reflect on the five-year anniversary of the January 6th insurrection, I want to thank the brave Capitol Police and law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to protect our democracy. I am eternally grateful for their bravery and dedication.”
Pramila Jayapal has served as U.S. Representative for Washington’s 7th District since replacing Jim McDermott in 2017 and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai (formerly Madras State) in India in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal holds degrees from Georgetown University (BA, 1986) and Northwestern University (1990).
The remarks come amid ongoing national debate about accountability following the events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, which saw supporters of then-President Trump breach security during certification proceedings for the presidential election results.
