U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, recently posted a series of updates on her official Twitter account regarding ongoing debates over Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding, deaths in ICE custody, and calls for Congressional oversight on war powers.

On March 29, 2026, Jayapal outlined the current status of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and DHS funding negotiations. She stated: “Here’s where things really stand on TSA funding:

– The Senate UNANIMOUSLY voted to fund DHS, EXCEPT for ICE & CBP.
– House Republicans then decided to instead vote on funding ALL of DHS for 60 days.
– The Senate would now have to vote on this funding, but it will likely fail.” This tweet provided a summary of the legislative back-and-forth between the House and Senate over appropriations for agencies within DHS.

The following day, March 30, Jayapal reported a new fatality among individuals held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She wrote: “Today, I was notified of another death that occurred in ICE custody, bringing the total to 45 deaths under the second Trump administration.

These are not just numbers, they’re people. It’s devastating and we can’t let it continue. We need accountability & we must dismantle ICE.”

Later that same day, Jayapal addressed foreign policy concerns regarding military engagement under President Trump’s administration. She stated: “We MUST have another vote on a War Powers Resolution to tell Trump NO WAR without Congressional authorization.

He is putting our troops and our entire country at risk.”

Pramila Jayapal has served as the U.S. Representative for Washington’s 7th District since 2017 after replacing Jim McDermott and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. Born in Chennai in 1965 and currently residing in Seattle, she holds degrees from Georgetown University and Northwestern University.
