U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, who represents Washington’s 7th district in Congress, has called for a shift in U.S. policy toward Cuba through a series of social media posts on April 6, 2026.
In her first post at 16:59 UTC, Jayapal stated: “Over the past few decades, we’ve seen a failed U.S. policy toward Cuba. This is a new moment. Instead of blockades, sanctions, and embargoes, we must pursue real negotiations that help the people of both our countries.”
Later that day at 18:31 UTC, she added: “Now is the time for us to reverse the U.S. government’s policies that no longer serve the American people or the Cuban people, starting with ending the illegal U.S. fuel blockade.”
At 20:16 UTC on April 6, Jayapal described her recent visit to Cuba with Rep. Jackson and emphasized the urgency of avoiding military conflict between the two nations: “While @Rep_Jackson and I were in Cuba, we saw the incredible suffering on the ground of the Cuban people. It’s now critical that the U.S. does not go to war with Cuba, and that we negotiate to end the sanctions and fuel blockade.”
Pramila Jayapal has served as a member of Congress since 2017 after previously holding office in the Washington State Senate from 2014 to 2016. She was born in Chennai in 1965 and currently resides in Seattle. Jayapal earned her undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and later completed additional studies at Northwestern University.
The debate over U.S.-Cuba relations has persisted for decades amid longstanding embargoes and diplomatic challenges.
